At The Big Foody Food Tours we are always asked where are the best places to eat in Auckland and while we can give you our opinion Iconic Auckland Eats is the ultimate guide to what the locals love!
The brain child of our good friend Annie Dundas at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, Iconic Auckland Eats is a list of 100 of the most beloved dishes in Auckland Restaurants voted for by Aucklanders themselves.
I was one of the moderators last year and loved the complete mix and diversity of cuisine sent in to the competition. Whether it was a Kimcheese Burger from Grey Lynn stalwart Tiger Burger, the highly delicious and regularly tasted on our tours, cheese scone at Homeland or the fish sliders at Depot, there is something in the list for everyone.
One of the most exciting things about Iconic Auckland Eats is the length and breadth of the region the dishes are sent in from. On the 2022 edition there are half shell oysters from Matakana in the North, goats cheese croquettes from the absolutely glorious Casita Miro on Waiheke Island (go, just go, don’t pass go, just go,)Adobo Del Diablo, a taste of the Philippines from our local Hapunan in North West Auckland or the mouth watering Green Papaya Thai Salad from Blue Ox Babe in Pukekohe. Wherever you are staying of visiting there was something to hunt out and enjoy!
Of course 2023 has seen new restaurants opening, more variety than ever available in Auckland and some of those fabulous classics stay the same but discovered by more people than ever. We look forward to seeing the 100 Auckland Iconic Eats when it is released at the end of the year and can’t wait to include some of them on our Auckland Food Tours.
